La Storia:
La statua del Cristo degli Abissi è stata posta nel fondale marino della baia di San Fruttuoso vicino a Camogli e Portofino, nell’agosto del 1954.
La statua, alta circa 2,50 metri è stata realizzata in bronzo dallo scultore Guido Galletti, da un’idea di Duilio Marcante, e venne posta a circa 17 metri di profondità. Le mani del Cristo, rivolte in alto, sono aperte in segno di pace. A seguito della morte di Marcante venne posta una targa sul basamento della statua in sua memoria.
Nel 2003 la statua è stata restaurata per preservarla dalla corrosione e dalle incrostazioni e, soprattutto, per riattaccarle la mano staccata da un’ancora, per poi essere riposizionata sott’acqua il 17 luglio 2004 su un nuovo basamento, ad una profondità inferiore a quella precedente.

History:
The statue of the Christ of the Abyss is positioned at the bottom of the sea in the bay of San Fruttuoso near Camogli and Portofino, in august 1954. The statue is 2,50 meters tall and was made in bronze by the sculptor Guido Galletti, thanks to the idea of Duilio Marcante. It was placed at the depth of 17 meters. The hands of the Christ, addressed upward, are open as a symbol of peace. After the death of Marcante, a plate in his memory was placed on the basement of the statue.
In 2003 the statue was restored to protect it from corrosion and incrustation and more important, to hook up the hand that was broken by an anchor. The statue was then replaced underwater on july 17 2004 on a new basement at a less depth than before.
